ADT Confirms Data Breach After Customer Info Leaked on Hacking Forum

Summary:
Security giant ADT has confirmed that it suffered a data breach after actors allegedly leaked stolen customer data on Breached Forums, a popular cybercriminal platform. In a form 8-K filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), ADT stated that it recently “experienced a cybersecurity incident during which unauthorized actors illegally accessed certain databases containing ADT customer order information.” An investigation into the breach indicated that the actors were able to gain access to limited customer information, including email addresses, phone numbers, and postal addresses. At this time, ADT says there there is no evidence to suggest that customers' home security systems have been compromised, nor have the actors stolen customers' credit card data or banking information.

Security Officer Comments:
The breach seems to have affected a small percentage of the company’s overall client base, according to ADT. Although the exact number was not disclosed, the actor behind the post on Breached forums, 'netnsher,' noted that the leaked data includes 30,800 customer records, including customer emails, complete addresses, user IDs, and the products purchased. As a precaution, ADT customers should be on the lookout for targeted phishing emails, notably those impersonating ADT, as actors will likely use the stolen data to gain more intel on impacted victims.
